Convergence of LA (Los Angeles)
Los Angeles became a place of frequent visits for me - for culture or for business. I still feel as if I haven't seen it - but how could I it's so big. To get to a place there you use various highways and I would often take photos from the car. This view of the rails and trains caught my eye because of the lines and goog material for composition. I created a fantasy. The skyscrapers don't look the same in reality but maybe this is how I feel about them. The colors are based on another abstract landscape painting of mine but they are digitally tweaked.
Catalina Carts
I simply love this painting. I painted it in watercolor and pastels and then I did it digitally in this one. Catalina is the island where Hollywood actors of the old Hollywood era would go to relax and not just them. It is right opposite Los Angeles and you can often see it from the coast. There are many craftsman houses and everybody uses golf carts to move. This painting doesn't show that is is an island but it definitely has its relaxed atmosphere. Very different from all other island I've visited in Europe for sure.
Lunch with a View (La Jolla)
This is another remake of my old watercolor and color pencil painting. You will not find this place like this today - or I think you won't. I didn't when I was looking for the restaurant. What you are looking at is a view from Prospect Street in La Jolla towards La Jolla Cove with that big arch of stone or cave in the distance. I used bright "island" colors to make it look like a vacation destination, which it is but in reality it has that worn out wood look of the Pacific coast buildings. I always loved the composition of this photo so I had to paint it again.
Back Pain Drive (Los Angeles)
Both these painting are from 2020 Covid times. Just a simple car ride through the streets of a big city (LA) at dusk was so much fun and also taking photos. They came out blurry, you know, how the lights are all jagged and the photo is not focused at night when you move or you didn't set the camera right.. So I had these great looking photos and I had back pain and no patience to sketch. The result are these abstract cities where I used plenty of Procreate brushes and some photo effects and had lots of fun with it.
Happy to Be Out (los Angeles)
Hollywood Blvd.
It is a famous place. The walk of Fame and its stars, the Chinese Theatre... It is also just a street in Hollywood with a lot of cars, tourists, shops, restaurants and theaters. It is a kind of an urban jungle for me and I painted it as such. I used colors inspired by Van Gogh's Sunflowers. This painting is in kind of a cartoonish style - that might go well with the old Hollywood, I think.
From the Other Side (San Diego)
Pacific Beach of San Diego has a big pier going into the ocean. You can rent a little house on the pier and have a vacation there. Unusual place, I don't even know if I'd want to try it. But the look from the end of the pier towards the coast is great. You don't even need a boat. I made this in more loose and painterly style. I used this favorite color palette of mine on my Wonder Women series and my own self portrait which you can find on my Doll Portraits page.
LA Sunset
Sunsets in California are legendary. Especially those over the Pacific Ocean viewed from the coast. But also the LA skyline is great to watch at that time. You'd have to be looking from behind it towards the ocean to get the look which is in this picture. This is an artwork done in Illustrator so it's graphic art not a painting. It can se used as a poster. Again, the buildings are more or less fantasy and it could be any city. I created this however after painting the skyline in watercolor so for me, it's my version of LA in sunset.
