Dominikanska Curve (Brno)
Brno historical center was not so beautiful when I was young as it is now. The houses are repaired and reconstructed. I looks as good as Prague at some parts. One of the nice streets is Dominikánská. I never painted Brno before. So painting is was kind of exciting. It's the town where I was born and also lived gfor many years. This painting is done in my mosaic style but has a bit graphic/cartoonish look as well. The color palette is one of my most successful recently. It is based on a painting of my grandmother by my grandfather. I wonder what he would say to this little artork of mine...
By the Old School (Žatec)
Žatec is a historical town in western Bohemia famous for its hops. Filmmakers like it and Barbra Streisand chose it as a suitable exterior for her movie Yentl. I was an extra in this movie when I was 18. So after more than 40 years I went there to see it all again. This street is right in the middle of the film location. It was surreal to visit it and even more strange to paint it.
Colored Cobblestones (Brno)
The other side of Dominikánská street in Brno is as enchanting as the one in my first painting. You can see the stairs leading to the New City Hall - that's what it's called even though it is old. Cobblestones are everywhere and painting them in different colors is fun. The color palette is based on my photo from New York. The street is not as colorful as this painting, I wanted it to be. And it came out as if it was from a a fairy tale.
Walls in the Clouds (Mikulov)
My third portrait of Mikulov. I painted it in California and used my older painting as a model (acrylic and pastel on paper). This time I focused on colors and shapes and everything in a mosaic style. The palette is based on the colors from the beach in Tel Aviv. The painting came out quite abstract and I like the jumble of shapes in it, it's something I'd like to do more of, but it doesn't always work out that way. I have old memories of Mikulov from my youth and it seems to inspire me a lot.
Road to Heaven (Prague)
This Painting has a long history, or rather its original. I painted the same composition in oil (my first oil) as a gift for Barbra Streisand who was coming to Czechoslovakia to film her movie Yentl in 1982. I got to be an extra in it and gave her the painting. Then I made a copy in color pencils and in 2024 I decided to paint it digitally. I think this one is as good as the original. You can probably recognise - if you know Prague, that this is my fantasy based on the old Jewish quarter.
Watch the Eyes in the Skies (Prague)
Another painting from Prague and another old story. This one was originally made in color pencil and I sent it to the US as a gift in 1989 - I've never learned if it arrived. I made it as an illustration to a song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". This version is a merge with my other painting with the eyes in the sky - instead of the rainbow. But you can still recognise some of the buildings of the New World in Lesser Quarter of Prague. Actually there's an original to this in watercolor in my private collection.
A Walk in Alfama (Lisbon)
In 2024 I finally visited Portugal, only Lisbon so far but it was very inspiring. I knew that I would find places that I'd like to paint. And Alfama was exactly what I expected and more. When I decided to paint it I chose to use a pencil in Procreate. That created this interesting and illustration like effect and I love it.
The Moment I knew (Lisbon)
Miradouro de Santa Luziais the place you see in this painting. When I saw this view I knew that I'd have to paint it. This was waht I was looking for in beautiful Lisbon. There were many amaying sight but this one took my breath away. The "A Walk in Alfama" painting came first beacuse it seemed easier. This one was a bit intimidating - lots to take in and work with. But I did it and in my mosaic style using a color palette based on the colors of the Lisbon tiles. This in now one of my most favorite paintings of mi
Your Light on Me (Jerusalem)
In 2022 I visited Israel. And Jerusalem of course. It was an incredible though short trip and I left with this feeling that is expressed in the painting. I'm very familiar with Greece and love the Mediterranean - and I found that all there but there was something more and older in the air. Yes, it is a very special place.
Above the Port (Jaffa)
Tel Aviv is great, but you want more the old than the new when you are in this part of the world. This little street was just above the port of Jaffa, right next to Tel Aviv - absolutely charming, cosy and oriental, a small artist shop and a little courtyard full of flowers ... the mystery of what is hidden behind the walls. That is what always inspires me most.
